hello!

Hi guys!

I read again what the exercise is about, and i made this draft presentation, the idea is (as its says in the handbook):

A number of issues could be contributing to the decline of your publishing house. As a group, please evaluae what youo think would be the most influential and damaging issues. When you finish the evaluation, then propose what you would do to put this house back in the right direction.

and the known facts are that

- sales are inn decline
and blablabla

so i think we should do and overall evaluaion, like we did on the tabbles and not to start from the Know facts they give, as i see them as a starting point for us.

What do you think?

It doesn't sound like the website costs are going to be too high, but we need to decide if we are going to pay someone to design/maintain the site and whether we want to pay a specialist in search engine optimization so we come up when people search for photo publishers/gallery events.

This website gives the main costs:
http://www.infoclear.ca/articles/websitecosts.html

The one below gives the top ten web hosts in the UK:
http://uk-hosting-review.com/?gclid=CLaSlOyFkJcCFUob3godll-dIw

This is the one that came top. It has a stupid name but you get unlimited space and can include forums, blogs, visitor counters etc. and it supports InDesign and Dreamweaver technology.
http://hostpapa.co.uk/index.shtml

I'll work out some various costs depending on what we want to pay for anyway.

Monica - website looks good!

http://www.wildandwoolley.com.au/self_publish/getting_started this website shows the different book sizes. I know we aren't using these, but at least we know what the traditional ones look like.

http://www.writersservices.com/wps/s1_book_sizes.htm This website is very good as it explains the whole process of book production from pre production, printing, design, marketing etc. Click the options on the side.

http://www.viovio.com/wiki/index.php?structure_id=473 This website shows different types of square books so we can base our book size on one of these perhaps. It also has different binding options too

Commissioning Photographers and Copyright

Hi Guys- this website explains commissioning photographers and the process etc.
http://www.copyright4clients.com/faqs

It also contains the website where many photographers have their portfolios.
www.image-folio.com
I contacted Peter Dawson from the lifestle section for quotes on 120 photos, so hopefully he will reply.
Just to recap we decided to do a book of 100 pages, 20 pages per section- (N, E, S, W London) and 20 pages for the copyright, contents, index etc

Company Name

Okay,

Our company name is 'fulmen'.

This comes from the latin 'fulmen-inis n. [a stroke of lightning , a thunderbolt]. Transf., [a crushing calamity; mighty or irresistible power].'

Book/Paper sizes

http://www.trussel.com/books/booksize.htm

Hi guys i found this website on book/paper sizes. Not sure if this helps but it may do.

Saturday, 15 November 2008

Morning all

Yep Ed i think that sounds like a good plan!
Also has anyone had any good name suggestions? I was wondering if it would be cheeky to call it Fotovision/Photovision seeing as it's an obvious steal of Rotovision?! Plus there are companies called both already but they're not publishers...

Monica - i was thinking i'd write the 'about us', 'quotes' etc. for the website so we can just add it quickly when we come to put it together. Let me know if that's not ok! I won't put anything proper about the Sensory London series until we've fully decided a name and everything.

Have good weekends (and don't forget to send the tables!)

blog

The new blog look looks great!
Maybe we should start pulling things together into a presentation slideshow next week?

It would give us an idea of the structure of everything we're going to be talking about, and would highlight the main areas we need to work on, research etc...

Hello

This is the link to the website for the photograhic arts company i thought we could base our publishing house on. Obviously if anyone finds anything better or hates this one then we don't have to use it at all!

The site below is a guy's account of getting a photography book published. A lot of it is irrelevant but it's quick to read.

ARTICLE. The New Age of the Book

The New Age of the Book

Volume 46, Number 5 · March 18, 1999
The New Age of the Book
By Robert Darnton

Consider the book. It has extraordinary staying power. Ever since the invention of the codex in the third or fourth century AD, it has proven to be a marvelous machine—great for packaging information, convenient to thumb through, comfortable to curl up with, superb for storage, and remarkably resistant to damage. It does not need to be upgraded or downloaded, accessed or booted, plugged into circuits or extracted from webs. Its design makes it a delight to the eye. Its shape makes it a pleasure to hold in the hand. And its handiness has made it the basic tool of learning for thousands of years, even before the library of Alexandria was founded early in the fourth century BC.

Why then do we continue to hear prophecies about the death of the book?

Instead of disappearing, books have morphed into exciting new forms of publishing. Topping the pile are the coveted super-size titles, which are flying off the shelves at thousands of dollars each.

Britsh Journal of Photography

Hi Guys- this link tells you a bit about BJP magazine
http://www.incisivemedia.com/corporate/products/britishjournalofphotography

And this is the link to their website
http://www.bjp-online.com/

I rang them and to advertise with them the prices are as follows:
1/4 page - £380
1/2 page - £700
Full page advert- £1,300. this is per insertion, so for 1 week issue. If we were looking to book for 3 or 4 months they can reduce the price. Their audience are photographers and related industry people, services and courses on photography for e.g so a book on photography will be ideal here she says. I don't know how other prices will compare in terms of advertising but I can find out.
This is the book i was talking about.

For next meetings.

Hi guys!
Hi shazz! our next meeting is going to be on Tuesday 11th Nov, 2008 - 5:00 pm, library? i forgot. :P

We are going to:

- Book scan in library
- Join everyone's opinion.
- Establish which are our problems
- Propose solutions

Classroom on Wednesday

- Finish what we were doing on Tuesday.
- Start thinking about our presentation
- How and what are we going to include?

what do you think guys?

Meeting 7th November, 2008

In this meeting we decide to:

HOMEWORKS :P

1. Evaluate our art book publishing house through the different matters that a publishing house has (Content, Marketing, design, production), to determine what we might think would be the most influential and damaging issues for:

- Making sales decline
- Have bad reviews
- authors leaving pour company
- staff leaving us too

For this, will be using a table where we can find ( you can include more) a list of aspects, that will help us as a guide so we are not wondering around without an aim.

We are also going to compare it with stablish companies in this area, to see which advantage or disadvantages we have with them. Check catalogues.

2. Monica will send the table to everyone.

3. Try to define posible solutions.

4. Think about what our book for the 2nd assigment will be. (remembering it has to be part of a serie of books)

5. Think about what we'll put in our website.

Sorry guys for my bad english. I'm trying my best. You can always correct me. Thanks!
and remember that you always can add anything you think i had missed.
